Position Title: Programming Librarian & Outreach (Librarian I)

Schedule: Salaried full-time position (35 hours) including days, evenings and weekend hours as needed.

About the Position:

Hoboken Public Library is seeking an individual to create a deeper connection with its community and create innovative new programs a public library can offer its patrons.

As part of the Community Engagement Team and reporting to the Community Engagement Manager, this position is responsible for managing, coordinating, creating, and presenting adult library programming, utilizing both internal and external program sources, with a focus on outreach and underserved populations. Recent MLS graduates with an interest in adult and older adult programming and outreach are welcome to apply!

This position is responsible for a broad range of duties related to all aspects of Hoboken Library’s extensive and active programming. This includes but is not limited to developing, planning, and implementing adult and older adult programs for the community; instruction- based programming such as tech skill classes, job readiness assistance, and homework help programs; author talks, music performances, and cultural programs of interest to the community and beyond.

This position will include working with community organizations, social service providers, NGOs, and local schools, and the people they serve, as well as facilitating relationships with and among the community to address community-identified needs and produce long-term, sustainable programming initiatives that will have a positive impact for the community and the Library. Development of programmatic opportunities should incorporate inclusion, diversity, and equity values. The position would serve the residents at all Hoboken Public Library branches and throughout the community.

The position will require flexibility in terms of placement and assignments obliging the candidate to travel to multiple locations during the course of a day. Additionally, the position will call for flexibility in terms of availability, with occasional weekend and/or evening shifts required to support weekend/evening programs and library attendance at offsite events.

The candidate should possess a strong service orientation, professional boundaries and ethics, and a helpful demeanor; excellent communication skills to provide a high level of assistance to a diverse public who may be experiencing challenges; an understanding of the role of libraries and librarians in expanding community access to resources, collections, and services; the ability to perform both independently and as a team member; and sufficient physical stamina and general health to perform tasks as noted above.

Specific Job Duties:

Plans and conducts regular inclusive programs at library branches and offsite locations.

Creates new and expansive adult and older adult programs, collaborating with library staff and community partners to develop, plan, and implement programs that meet the needs of the community in accordance with the library’s mission.

Identifies trends and opportunities and plans adult programming accordingly. Supports library outreach, representing the Library and its services in the community.

Maintains a broad knowledge of print, electronic and community resources and their availability and location.

Helps organize events such as workshops, conferences, and fairs.

Supports the promotion of all library programs and services throughout the community.


Master of Library Science (MLS) or equivalent from an accredited university

Essential Abilities/Skills:

Ability to keep informed of current theories, objectives, principles, and techniques of librarianship: and an enthusiasm for adapting new technologies, library trends and innovations.

Ability to identify, customize, create and present innovative programs and services and integrate new technologies into library service.

Ability to provide instruction and technical expertise.

Excellent computer knowledge and understanding of current technology. Strong commitment to public service.

Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work in a fast-paced urban environment.

Knowledge and proficiency of written English, including style and editing standards. Sufficient physical stamina and general health to perform tasks as noted above.

Preferred Skills:

Fluency in a language other than English, especially Spanish.

Knowledge of Hoboken’s population, geography, and/or local government.
