Part-Time Library Assistant: IT / MakerSpace / Tech Services
Location: Hoboken Public Library, Hoboken, New Jersey
Hours: 25 hours per week; daytime, evening, and weekend hours required
Hourly Rate: $17.37
Position Summary
The Hoboken Public Library connects people with information, ideas, and opportunities to support lifelong learning, personal growth, and community development. We believe our greatest asset is our talented and committed staff. We are looking for a part-time Library Assistant who is eager to support innovation and contribute to a dynamic library environment.
About the Role
Reporting to the IT Manager, this position provides technical and paraprofessional support across several key areas, including the library’s MakerSpace, IT systems, and technical services. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in technology and a willingness to learn and share knowledge with both staff and patrons. This role includes supporting MakerSpace activities, basic IT troubleshooting, collection processing, and routine technical tasks.
Performance will be evaluated periodically to ensure adherence to library policies and standards.
Key Responsibilities
Technology and IT Support
- Assist with installation, configuration, and testing of computer hardware, software, printers, scanners, and systems
- Support system maintenance and software updates (e.g., Chrome, Windows OS, Adobe Creative Cloud)
- Respond to service issues and help requests via in-person, phone, or Slack communication
- Assist in setting up user accounts and devices
- Provide A/V support for programs and meetings
- Perform inventory and audits of tech and A/V equipment
- Troubleshoot and maintain printers, including ink and toner replacement
MakerSpace & Programming
- Support daily operations in the MakerSpace
- Learn and demonstrate use of MakerSpace equipment to staff and patrons
- Promote MakerSpace resources and services
Technical Services & Collection Maintenance
- Process library materials (books, media, etc.) for circulation
- Maintain and update catalog records using online library software
- Inspect and repair materials as needed
- Shift and shelve materials and push book carts
General Duties
- Maintain a clean and organized workspace
- Provide excellent customer service
- Work at all library locations as scheduled
- Perform other duties as assigned
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Ability to learn and navigate complex computer systems
- Flexible schedule and adaptability to changing tasks
- Familiarity with tools such as G-Suite, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, Slack, Happeo, Canva, WordPress, Polaris/LEAP, Communico, Zoom
- Previous library experience preferred
- Fluency in a language other than English, especially Spanish, is highly desirable
